Guessing, Mind-Changing, and the Second Ambiguous Class

چکیده

In his dissertation, Wadge defined a notion of guessability on subsets of the Baire space and gave two characterizations of guessable sets. A set is guessable iff it is in the second ambiguous class (∆2), iff it is eventually annihilated by a certain remainder. We simplify this remainder and give a new proof of the latter equivalence. We then introduce a notion of guessing with an ordinal limit on how often one can change one’s mind. We show that for every ordinal α , a guessable set is annihilated by α applications of the simplified remainder if and only if it is guessable with fewer than α mind changes. We use guessability with fewer than α mind changes to give a semi-characterization of the Hausdorff difference hierarchy, and indicate how Wadge’s notion of guessability can be generalized to higher-order guessability, providing characterizations of ∆α for all successor ordinals α > 1.

Guessing morphological classes of unknown German nouns

A system for recognition and morphological classification of unknown German words is described. Given raw texts it outputs a list of the unknown nouns together with hypotheses about their possible stems and morphological class(es). The system exploits both global and local information as well as morphological properties and external linguistic knowledge sources. It learns and applies ending-gue...

The Impact of Correction for Guessing Formula on MC and Yes/No Vocabulary Tests' Scores

A standard correction for random guessing (cfg) formula on multiple-choice and Yes/Noexaminations was examined retrospectively in the scores of the intermediate female EFL learners in an English language school. The correctionwas a weighting formula for points awarded for correct answers, incorrect answers, and unanswered questions so that the expectedvalue of the increase in test score due to g...

Reconsidering Philosophical Questions and Neuroscientific Answers: Two Pillars of Inquiry

I propose the next steps in the neuropragmatic approach to philosophy that has been advocated by Solymosi and Shook (2013). My focus is the initial process of inquiry implicit in addressing philosophical questions of cognition and mind by utilizing the tools of neuroscientific research. I combine John Dewey’s pattern of inquiry with Charles Peirce’s three forms of inference in order to outline ...

Supervised and Unsupervised Word Sense Disambiguation on Word Embedding Vectors of Unambigous Synonyms

This paper compares two approaches to word sense disambiguation using word embeddings trained on unambiguous synonyms. The first one is an unsupervised method based on computing log probability from sequences of word embedding vectors, taking into account ambiguous word senses and guessing correct sense from context. The second method is supervised. We use a multilayer neural network model to l...

Guessing in Multiple Choice Questions: Challenges and Strategies

Introduction: Guessing is one of the most challenging issues in multiple choice questions. Several strategies, such as negative scoring, have been suggested for preventing students from choosing the right answer just by chance. However, there is no general agreement on using such strategies. The aim of this study was to review the scoring methods which are used for reducing guessing, and evalua...
